it is the end of summer, and well has been for a little while now, but i was in denial about it. only last week did i finally harvest my tomatillos from the garden and i still have not planted any of my autumn and winter crops yet. (next week i hope)
this was my first time growing tomatillos and it turned out to be easy and i got heaps from the four plants i had in the garden. they are really quite amazing to watch grow, with the papery skin forming first and then the fruit growing inside the protective paper basket.
here they are with the paper skins removed. they need to be washed well as they are a bit sticky.
then i cut them each in half and put them under the griller for about 10 minutes until they were lightly browned.
i put garlic, onion, chillies, lime juice, and corriander (cilantro) in the blender and then added the roasted tomatillos.
the result was a really fresh tomatillo salsa or salsa verde. it is really yummy with corn chips even without cheese!
i will definitely grow these again next summer.
