TILT BIke Shelter - Complete!

the day i left to go overseas about 6 weeks ago Deb and the council team poured the concrete slab around the verticals of the bike shelter.

 

then a few days later Deb went back with the builders and installed the perforated sheet with the large bike graphic on the fence line. 

 

this completed the TILT Bike Shelter

i think it looks great, well proportioned and pretty spot on what the model looked like. 

 

the woman from the council who project managed the commission sent us these photos, this is the bike shelter in use on a weekend.

 

its nice to have the people using it, and enjoying it.

 

i myself still have not seen it in person, i will make a trip there this weekend to check it out. another CHEB project complete.

professional photography

i think getting professional photography of your work is the most important thing you can do as an artist. well most important after actually making the work.  this is because these images are what you use to apply for your next exhibition, or commission, or funding. many times more people will see the image rather than the real thing. so the photography is very important. deb and i hired a photographer to document our bike racks. it was a rainy and windy day but lucky for us the sun came out long enough for us to take these photos. here they are.

(and me again) i like how the movement adds to the image, making them less about the object and more about the public space.

job well done, in the meantime i have been busy at the computer writing expressions of interest and concept proposals for the next job.

finished bike racks

the bike racks are all complete and being enjoyed by the public. we finished them 2 weeks ago but i just have not had time to sort through my images until now.

this is the branch rack outside the botanic gardens. i think this is the most successful bike rack we did. 

 

it is simple, effective and useful. the other day when i drove past the branch rack had 3 bikes on it and the rest of the racks were empty, so maybe it is the people's favorite too.

this is the install at grenfell street, outside an aboriginal cultural center. this was the most daunting artwork to do, but i think it is also really successful.

here is a detail of the shadow. this piece is a gentle reminder that someone has been here before, and that time will change your perspective. it also reminds us that we are connected to the land and the sky. or else you could just walk by and say that is a cool bike rack.

 

the third site, was the hardest one for us to come up with and idea. it is in a busy commercial area, so we decided to tackle the busy space with highly visible graphics.

 

a kind of heli-pad landing spot for bicycles and a bit of fun. 

it actually turned out really well and has activated the space.

 

we even refreshed an existing bike rack at the site.

so that is this job complete. 

now time to start writing applications for the next public art opportunity.

final install day - linemarking

the final day of installation involved line marking the ground in the area under and around where we in stalled our bike racks with the signs on them. 

we found these great guys that were really open to working with us on an 'arty' job.

the idea here was to create a space that was kind of like a landing pad for bicycles, inspired by a heli-pad line marking.

 it was nice to use the graphic of the bike that is normally used on the bike lanes in the city.

there was a bit of parking up and taping off areas, but for the most part it went really quickly.

 

this is a bike rack that was already a the site, so we just wanted to liven it up a bit and make it more noticeable and part of our design. the line work and arrow and numbering do this well we think.

this is the landing pad area almost complete, just a bit of text left to do.

install week

its been a busy week this week, so busy that the week will have to be blogged about in at least 2 entries. its been install week and me and deb have been busy installing bike racks at 3 sites around the city.

 

these are 2 bike racks we got manufactured at a stainless steel place across the street from our studio. handy.

here are 2 more, for the second site.

 

there are different images on each side.

 

this is the bronze branch rack. we had 2 made, but will only install one at the site. 

we picked up all these bike racks and had them ready to go on monday. 

 

on tuesday morning we started outside the botanic gardens, installing the branch rack.

 

it didn;t take too long to dig the 4 holes required to set in the footings. 

 

then we set it in concrete and left it to set over night. the bitumen needs to be refilled around the base to complete it.  this was the simplest instal of all three to do. some final photos to follow next week. 

 

from here it was off to the second site.

we had to dig out under the red brick paver and make enough room for the bike racks to fit in.

 

we set them in place and then we concreted them in place.

 

deb set up office on the nearby bench, organising the late city work permits form her mobile office. 

they look good, but this artwork will not be complete until next monday when we put on the line marking on the ground below.
