public art commission finally complete!

deb and i began this public art commission over a year and a half ago. in the original brief the project was due to be completed in december 2013. we finally completed it in december 2014.  we had the art components ready to go but the whole street was being re-landscaped and overhauled and that whole process took much longer than originally anticipated by the council. but we got there in the end and we think it looks pretty good. here is what we did.

there was a lot of salvaged slate that we collected and re-purposed to be included in the footpath. the area has a history as a port, and is still a bit rough in character, so we wanted the materials and imagery to fit with the surroundings

an anchor tattoo imagery seemed appropriate.

we also did a series of slate inclusions that had imagery and poetry.

this runs the length of the footpath in one section for about 15 meters.

it read 'we are all present links in the endless chain of cause and effect'

and then we did a few bold images of chain links

also related to the port history

and the poem

we were lucky to be given access to some old wharf timbers and for these we designed some bright bench seating.

a detail of the bench seat with the artists blurred in the background.

they fit the area really well being robust and having a history of a different use before hand still readable.

there was a long green curved arbour that would have originally had some kind of vine growing on it. the council wanted this to be refreshed, so we took some salvaged timber and painted some high-vis colours onto them and created a bright walkway refresh.

this was some what controversial with some residents as they wanted it to be rain proof, but the council did not want to deal with guttering etc, so we kept it simple.

the view looking up as you walk under it

we also really love the shadow play on the ground from the new structure above.

here is another bench seat in white, again with blurred artists in the background.

we did another collection of artworks in front of the local community center

we had kids from the childcare center do some drawings of the port, and we had these scaled to fit 300 mm x 300 mm pavers that were included in the footpath.

they were very good images to work with.

and finally the council had received feedback from the community during consultation that they wanted to see more colour.  since we already had the walkway planned at tone end of the street we thought it would be fun to include colour on the other end of the street at the roundabout.

so we painted some concentric rings of colour like a giant bulls eye at the roundabout to tie it all together and add some colour and fun to the street scape.

other than the timeline changing we had a great time on this project, working very hands on for every part of the artworks. the council has been good to work with and we are happy with the results. and it feels great to have a project that has taken so long to see completed finally done.

on to new things in the new year!

TILT BIke Shelter - Complete!

the day i left to go overseas about 6 weeks ago Deb and the council team poured the concrete slab around the verticals of the bike shelter.

then a few days later Deb went back with the builders and installed the perforated sheet with the large bike graphic on the fence line.

this completed the TILT Bike Shelter

i think it looks great, well proportioned and pretty spot on what the model looked like.

the woman from the council who project managed the commission sent us these photos, this is the bike shelter in use on a weekend.

its nice to have the people using it, and enjoying it.

i myself still have not seen it in person, i will make a trip there this weekend to check it out. another CHEB project complete.

the roof and the rain

on friday the roof for our bike shelter was delivered. it had been raining off and on all week, but friday morning it was kind of stormy and at some times even hailing.

regardless of the weather the roofers went ahead and installed the roof on the bike shelter. deb and i went down to site to have a look during a moment while the rain had stopped.

the end frames will have our perforated bike image on them after the concrete slab is poured.

it looks great, just like the model!

we had hoped to pour the final concrete slab today and then install the fence panels tomorrow, but the rain has now delayed our progress.

not sure if i mentioned this but i am leaving on a plane overseas tomorrow for 5 weeks, so it will be in deb's capable hands to manage the final details of this project. not ideal but the way it has to be.

today - vinyl

today 2 exciting things happened.

one was the midget mix cement truck arriving to finish off the last of the footings for the fence around the bike shelter.

it was good to see the final pour and all the supports in place.

this is the view of our construction site from the main intersection.

the second exciting thing that happened today was that deb and i got to apply the coloured vinyl detail to the structure.

each vertical pole gets a collection of brightly coloured sign writers vinyl.

we were worried it would be difficult to apply the vinyl, but it went on relatively easily.

we were also worried it was going to start raining any minute, as you can tell from the cloudy sky in the background, but it held off.

it is looking just like our model!

we are happy with the progress

we just have to hope that the forecast for rain and hail tomorrow morning when the roof is suppose to be installed is incorrect, or at least holds off until mid day.

will let you know how we go.

tilt bike shelter install

this week the bike shelter deb and i designed is getting installed.

today i had my camera with full batteries on site. its hard to see the total design with the fence behind and the struts up as well but it is coming along.

we were happy today that it was not raining, and so were the guys installing the structure.

you can kind of see the structure in this image, there are 14 vertical poles that are positioned at various angles and held together at the top with a cross section.

the holes were dug yesterday in the mud and rain, and it is lucky that they all just didn't fill back up with mud in the rain.

this is looking up at the structure.

this is the end of the structure where the roof is at its lowest point about 2.8 meters

back at the workshop here is our bicycle graphic that will go on the perimeter fence at the end of the bike shelter. it will get installed next week, after the final concrete pad is poured.

more on the progress tomorrow!
