newst pieces

there are a few art competitions deadlines coming up, and this is a great motivator to get some artwork that has been in the works for a while.

this piece is made to fit on a backing board that i had a friend make for me. i have had it for a while but have finally decided to use it, and i am really liking it.

this is a collection of small squares that i have been working on that are part of a new series about exploring my local area.

and these are the photos from the photographers. i went to a new person to get my work shot. i like the results, a bit of drama in the lighting but i think it works. and i never would have thought about shooting black on black work, on a black background but it seems to work.

this is the final image of the favourite 4 smaller squares, again drama in the lighting and a black background.

i also got this piece re shot at the photographers, to see who it went with mirror, and again i like the result. although it does not look like mirror, it does give the same feel as how the piece looks at times when you live with it, as it changes all the time in the light and as you move around it.

so now is the waiting game to see if i am successful and shortlisted for any of the art prizes. and if not i have at least made some new work and some new discoveries in photography of the work.

recenlty in the studio

i have been in the studio trying to make a few new pieces before the end of the year.

I have been using mirror and using the sandblaster to removes areas of the mirror from the back.

i like the affect but i am not sure if it is too hard to see.

maybe the images need to be simpler?

these are professional shots in the studio. its almost necessary for this work to be able to see it properly.

i think i need to keep working on this idea, its not quite there yet.

but there is something....

this image above worked quite well. one mirror is the positive of the image and the other is a reflection and the negative of the image. i find it really interesting. this is hanging in my house now - trying to see if it is working. but i think i will investigate the reflection, positive negative again in my work.

i have also been working on a 3 panel black fire polished piece

here is the studio image of it.

and some detail images

i have entered this one into an art competition. i find out in the new year if i was successful.

exhibition prep and public artwork fixup

last week was a busy week. it started last sunday when deb and i met on site at the walkway we had put some coloured timbers on previously. we were not entirely happy with the final result and wanted to add more lighter coloured timber to the artwork.

we had the ute loaded up with extra timbers that we were going to install on the framework in situ. i dont have nay photos of work in progress, as we were too busy working but will take some next time becuase even though we started at 8am we were only half finished at 3pm, so in a couple weekends we are going to do it all again.

then i had to get the rest of the details done for my exhibition, glue backings, final checks, labels for boxes. i took my exhibition work to the photographer

and he did a great job, getting it all photographed beautifully (you can see the images soon after the show is up)

and then i spent the rest of the day after photography packing my work ready to be sent to melbourne so it will be there ready when i arrive on monday.

monday borris and i fly to melbourne for the week, for install, exhibition opening, visiting with friends and a general get away. more on that as it happens.

professional photographs

as promised here are some professional images of my work, taken at the photographers studio before i had any wall hanging systems in place.

they are all set up on the floor and then photographed from above, so they look like they are hanging on a wall.

the photographer usually does one straight on shot, and then a couple details or angled shots.

this session took about 4 hours to shoot

but that is not bad considering it was the whole exhibition.

i am not sure about the success of these black on black images, i might get then photographed again, because when you see them in just the right light the images are really clear.

these two larger square ones were not in my exhibition at murray bridge but in a group show up in the barossa wine region. i think at least one of these sold during the opening.

that's always a nice thing, especially when it is some new work.

i think this multi panel black on black piece looks even better on the black backing board, rather than on the plain white background.

below are the documented images of the mirrors. to make it so we could see the image we had to get rid of most of the reflection, so they don;t look like mirrors in these images, but you can see the artwork well.

my show finishes next week on dec 1 and then i take it down and get it ready to be sent interstate for another version of this show in canberra.

professional photography

i think getting professional photography of your work is the most important thing you can do as an artist. well most important after actually making the work.  this is because these images are what you use to apply for your next exhibition, or commission, or funding. many times more people will see the image rather than the real thing. so the photography is very important. deb and i hired a photographer to document our bike racks. it was a rainy and windy day but lucky for us the sun came out long enough for us to take these photos. here they are.

 (that's me!)

(and me again) i like how the movement adds to the image, making them less about the object and more about the public space.

love this detail of the branch next to the slick bike.

job well done, in the meantime i have been busy at the computer writing expressions of interest and concept proposals for the next job.
