exhibition prep and public artwork fixup

last week was a busy week. it started last sunday when deb and i met on site at the walkway we had put some coloured timbers on previously. we were not entirely happy with the final result and wanted to add more lighter coloured timber to the artwork.

we had the ute loaded up with extra timbers that we were going to install on the framework in situ. i dont have nay photos of work in progress, as we were too busy working but will take some next time becuase even though we started at 8am we were only half finished at 3pm, so in a couple weekends we are going to do it all again.

then i had to get the rest of the details done for my exhibition, glue backings, final checks, labels for boxes. i took my exhibition work to the photographer

and he did a great job, getting it all photographed beautifully (you can see the images soon after the show is up)

and then i spent the rest of the day after photography packing my work ready to be sent to melbourne so it will be there ready when i arrive on monday.

monday borris and i fly to melbourne for the week, for install, exhibition opening, visiting with friends and a general get away. more on that as it happens.

behind the scenes

in my last post i wrote that the real deadline for the exhibition had passed, as i had all the work completed for photography. this was only half true. while a lot of the pressure was off i still had a lot of work to do before the exhibition opening. this is literally behind the scenes work. all of the pieces in my show will hang on the wall. i used a variety of hanging systems.

i use some plate hangers on some of the work,

i use some clear plastic key hole hanging units on some of the work,

i use some metal flush wall mounts

i use custom made wood units

some of the metal systems get installed onto wooden backing panels

the panels have a recess in them

that allows them to slide onto the wooden cleat attached to the wall.

so then you have this,

ready to install the glass onto.

this past week has seen lots of measuring, leveling and math

i have been marking out measurements

so that i can hang my multi panel piece.

in some cases i had to make a map to hang on the wall to help me place the holes for the brackets.

then i can install the brackets in the correct position,

and then install the artwork on that.

and then finally the all important packaging.
its been a busy week. installation starts tomorrow, i will be delivering the work to the gallery and meeting with the install crew. opening next sunday, i can't wait to see it done.

last bit of cold working and packing - done!

yesterday started with a couple hours of cold working. i wanted to get all my work cold worked before it was packed.

i had these smaller tiles, that will be used for enamelling and sandblasting. i smoothed out the edges, so they are ready for the stencils to be applied.

i also finished these 16 large squares to cold work. they will make up one large or 2 smaller wall pieces. again i smoothed out the edges so i can start planning and doing layouts for them back in my studio.

after that all that was left is packing all the work i have made up to be shipped home.  i got this huge bag of off cuts of foam for $20! in the end it looked like i didn't use any of it but it was very necessary to make sure things arrive safely.

everything is wrapped in many layers of bubble wrap and then packed into a box, putting foam around them and in between each piece making sure nothing can move in transit.

a few short hours later 5 boxes, packed and ready to get quotes.
