what's new?

i have a cold. that's what's new. so i left work early today, got some medicine and am on the sofa under a blanket. perfect to update the blog.

here are some random happenings from the past couple weeks.

borris and i ate ourselves silly with some yummy cheese and fancy (expensive) crackers. we have a bio-dynamic blue cheese, goats curd with garlic and herbs in vine leaves, and a washed rind cows milk cheese with ash, alongside some yummy brown sesame seed crackers and celery crackers. its all gone now, but was so delicious.

my hair has been driving me crazy recently.

so when i am out i am scanning the crowds to be inspired for new hairstyles. when i went and got my hair cut the other day the woman who cut it had her hair in braids like these, so i thought, give that a try.

not too bad, good for keeping your hair out of your face. i have a few other styles to try out soon too. any suggestions for long straight hair?

i also recently got a new favorite cook book. super natural everyday by heidi swanson. read about it here, or here.

i bought it online on a whim, hoping it was a vegetarian cook book, (i couldn't tell online). it turns out to be one of my new favorites. it is a vego book, but not the usual kind. it has lots of yummy recipes in it, all with ingredients that are simple. the recipes are easy and the ones i have tried so far are tasty.

this is the cauliflower soup with mustard croutons i made the other week, looks just like the picture! we have also had the popcorn, (yes i know a recipe for popcorn sounds crazy, but believe me delicious) and i have a list started of the next few to try.

after i get over my cold that is.

what to do on a rainy day

it has been raining all day today. so it has been a great excuse to first have a lie in in bed this morning and listen to the rain. then boris and i decided to take in a movie Micmacs as we had a free pass to go see it. it was very good. it is from the same group that did Amelie. it was a different but quirky and entertaining.

and when we got back home it was feeling all cool and wintery out so i decided to make some roasted carrot and pumpkin soup, with some coconut milk and red curry paste mixed in. This is going to be dinner for the next few days. yumyum.

and then i made some yummy muffins. banana bran and chocolate ship muffins. borris and my new favorite. these should hopefully last us the week as well. they are great to take to work for breaky.

i love rainy days, and now this evening i get to sit in and watch tv,(death comes to town) eating soup and muffins. what a good sunday. hope the rest of the week follows in the same way.

borscht!

continuing with my winter soup making spree - here is my first attempt at making vegetarian borscht. i have never made it before because it seemed so daunting. i thought it was hard. i was worried it wouldn't taste as good as when my baba (grandma) or mom made it. but it was really good!

so either it's not that hard to make or i am a really good cook. for lunch yesterday i even went to the local pierogi shop and got some pierogi to eat with the soup and rye bread. back to my Ukrainian roots.
