already the middle of may

its hard to believe it is already the middle of may. things have been quiet on the blog but not because things have been quiet around here. i have been working on some public commissions with studio mates deb and rachel lately. this has meant working in areas unfamiliar with me and spending a bit of time at the computer rather than actually making. these activities are also hard to capture in a photo, but here is what i have been up to.

one thing i did make was this water tank. it is 1m wide by 1 m tall by 900mm thick. we needed a water tank so we could set up to photograph some bubbles in water. three of us spent an afternoon setting the water up and the air tubes, and the background for photography. the final set up included black fabric around the camera and required all three of us to be holding something, making it impossible to photograph the entire set up but it was fairly involved.

here is deb making some bubbles in out water tank.

the images of the bubbles are being used in some graphic imagery that we are composing for part of the new big hospital that is being built in the city. the final image will be 4 meters tall and 36 meters long, and it all started with this water tank.
another thing we have been working on is the graphics for the outside facade of the hospital. the scale of this is so big that we needed to project the image onto the building behind our studio to get a sense of scale for our drawing.

here is deb with the paper print out of the graphic, comparing it to the large projection.

and this is the projection of the graphic to scale by height. it will be 7m tall and over 100 meters long in real life.

we projected different sections to get a sense of the scale of our drawing and some of the elements in the drawing.

it was nice seeing the small drawing blown up on the wall. next time we are thinking bean bags and popcorn too for movie night.

the other thing that has been taking up some time is preparing and presenting a concept for a public commission that is a suspended sculpture in an entrance way to a new library.

this is the model we made, of the entrance way and our idea for a large 7 meter long felt cloud to be suspended in the main entry.

the cloud would be light in a slowly changing colour light, so that when looking at it you would barely notice any change but if you went into the library the cloud might be blue but when you left an hour later it might be purple.

we are still waiting to hear if we were successful in getting this commission. but it has been fun working on the model and exploring the idea.

its been great collaborating and working on public commissions. i am also busy with 3 other smaller commissions and designing for another one, so things are busy, but soon i must make room in my brain to think about my exhibition later in the year and i should start making that work next month, so hopefully soon this blog will be busy with updates on my creative activities.
