while i have been at my artist residency there is another artist in residence making work right next to me - mel willis. she is kiln forming flat glass in spun metal molds and forms to create wall pieces that combine reflection and imagery.
this is a smaller prototype that she made at the beginning of her residency. the image is printed on the glass behind the domed lens.

this is the very very large mold she had made to slump the glass into in the kiln.
this is the class circle that will go in the mold and get heated up until it slumps to take on the shape of the mold.
here is mel putting the mold in the kiln and making sure everything is level. i have learnt quite a lot about kiln forming and slumping from mel and watching her make her work.
this is the result from that firing, the dome of clear glass. its over a meter wide.
this is another piece that mel has been working on.
