a little while ago i started making a quilt with my friend in canada. we each cut out 4 and a half inch squares of patterned fabric. for each one i cut for me i also cut one for her, and she did the same. then when we had a stack of them we would post each other the pile of squares. we have quite a few now and we have decided to starting thinking about what the final quilt will look like.
i saw this on a blog one day and really liked the layout of the squares with the white, and also the simple but effective quilting. right now we have about half the number of squares we need to make a double bed quilt. if we go with this pattern then all we have to do is cut the solid squares and the start piecing it together.
this is where we are at. the decision about colour for the solid squares. i did a couple small layouts to get an idea of some options.
i agree that the white looks clean and fresh, but i am terrified of quilts with white. i just think they will look dull and dirty in no time.
i think my favorite colour - black is a nice option. keeps it clean still but not as scary.
and then just for fun i tried red. also looks good, probably not the right shade of red, but really any solid will probably look good.
looking at these i am now thinking a green or grey will work well. i will try and do a photo sample of those options soon too. but every time i look at that first photo of the finished quilt with the white tile i just think it looks so good. not sure what to do.
what do you think?

I think I've made my mind up and then I look at your photos again and I can't decide: white or a solid colour...maybe I'll go try some layouts right now!! ps. I made a quilt with lots of white several years ago and it's not grubby at all;)
The finished quilt does look very pretty! Hard decision, for sure...good luck!!!
