community bookshelf
a friend told me about this community bookshelf located on a bike path under the bridge close to my place. it is a great idea and so simple. basically you go by with any books that you don't want anymore. you just put the books on the shelf. if you see something you want you take it and then leave something in its place. i have been many times and the books i put down are always gone. its kind of like my little challenge to see if i put down good books people want.
this project has inspired me to try and do some more immediate and more public "art". i am in the middle of getting something ready and will publish some images once i have put it out in the world. i know it isn't art exactly but it is interacting with the world and challenging the norms. i find it very very appealing to sidestep all the hierarchy and properness of gallery art. an art gallery show takes so long to plan, make and execute, where these projects are almost instant. these kinds of projects include everyone. people who aren't expecting to encounter anything, they were simply on their way to work, and now they are participating in this project.
