coober pedy trip - part 1 of 4

last week adam, borris and myself went on a road trip to coober pedy.

one of the first stops that felt like we were in the outback was Pimba

we stopped at spud's roadhouse for a late lunch and relax. there is not much else in pimba, but it was nice.

then back on the road. it is a 846 km trip so there was lots of driving.

a few short breaks along the way

and lots of beautiful landscape to drive through

my goal was to arrive before dark, partly because the roads can be dangerous to drive on at night with kangaroos but the moon was rising

and we saw the sunset from the car as we rode north further into the desert.

we stayed in a nice hotel, and had an underground dug out room.

it was literally dug out of the rock, and there were no windows in the room.

the next day we started exploring this opal mining town.

quite a few films have been made here, and this space ship is a remnant of pitch black movie.

there doesnt look like there is much in town but many places are underground and the only way you know they are there is by the vents sticking out of the hill tops. this means there is a home or room underground here.

many businesses are also underground. here we have an art gallery and hair salon.

walking in down the stairs into a cave like setting

the gallery was the cave, with artwork on the rock walls

we went on a tour of a private home that is still being lived in by caretakers. it was dug out by 3 women in the 1960's using only a shovel and pick axe!

it is a really nice home with a bar

kitchen, (this is the caretaker who gave us our tour)

three bedrooms,

and hallway up to an above ground but dug out pool.

the best part of underground living is the climate control. the rooms stay around 23 degrees celcius year round. this photo is looking up the air vent shaft in the underground home. to get more air flow you just open the vent on the roof. not bad for a place that gets to 40 degrees in summer.

more on other highlights next.
